Terry Burns MBE

It is with regret that the death is announced of Terry Burns MBE

Terry will be remembered by many people of both villages as a hard working community-minded man who put the interests of the villages first in many ways. He was a member of the group who were responsible for raising funds for the building of the Village Hall and served on its management committee for many years in various roles. He was also involved in village football and cricket teams for many years but most people will no doubt remember him for his work with CWAGMS. Together with his family he worked tirelessly to entertain people all over the country with professional musical productions of many kinds. His community work led to him being awarded the MBE in 2007, an honour which he appreciated but also dedicated to all who had helped him in his work. He will be sadly missed. His funeral will take place on Monday 14th June at 1.00pm at Christ Church, Gentleshaw.

Cannock Wood wins Best Village Competition

Cannock Wood has been declared the Calor Village of the Year for Staffordshire

Following on from it's success in the Staffordshire Best Kept Village competition Cannock Wood has now been designated Calor Village of the Year for Staffordshire. At a meeting of the Staffordshire Community Council at Gnosall on September 24th representatives from Cannock Wood were presented with a cheque for £250 and a souvenir metal plaque. Judges decided that Cannock Wood was worthy of representing Staffordshire in the National Final of the competition which is being contested by 40 other villages from around England. The judges looked for community involvement and a vibrant personality to the village. They were impressed by the many organisations and clubs which are part of the life of Cannock Wood. The next stage of the competition takes place aon various dates around the country and Cannock Wood will be visited on Friday 9th October when various organisations will be invited to take part in a further presentation of life in our village.

Following much discussion about road safety in the village of Cannock Wood and further to requests from concerned villagers the Parish Council have organised a presentation on the possibility of running a Community Speedwatch Scheme in the village. This will give us information regarding setting up the scheme, running it and any training costs involved. If anyone is interested the meeting starts at 7.15pm on Thursday 17th September. As usual members of the public are welcome to attend and participate in the open session before the official council meeting and a re also welcome to stay for the rest of the meeting but will not be able to participate in the official business which follows. Best Kept Village Competition

Cannock Wood gains a "Highly Commended" award in the Small Village category of the Lichfield/Cannock Chase District of the 2009 Staffordshire Best Kept Village competition.

After a break of several years it was decided that the time was right and that Cannock Wood should enter the Best Kept Village Competition once again. This entailed making sure that the village and its surroundings was kept free of litter and that roads and paths were lept tidy. This was accomplished by volunteers doing regular litter picks and generally keeping an eye on the village. Villagers also helped by keeeping their gardens and properties tidy. 63 villages entered this years competition and judging took place between May and July with the county split up into different districts. The results were announced at a presentation evening in the County Buildings, Stafford. Let us hope that next year we can improve our position. Thanks go to everyone who helped in any way and a special thank you to Maureen Allen for co-ordinating the entry.

Cannock Chase Ramblers visit Blithfield Reservoir

On Wednesday 5th August the Chase Ramblers were guests of Abbots Bromley and District Footpath Society when they joined them for an evening walk around the Blithfield Reservoir.

Blithfield Reservoir Public access to much of the shoreline of the Blithfield Reservoir is normally prevented due to the needs of wildlife (mainly the visiting birds), anglers and sailing club.

The annual walk by the Footpath Society is therefore a unique opportunity for many people to see at closer quarters this delightful part of Staffordshire.

On Wednesday 5th August a group of around thirty people walked from the Butter Cross in Abbots Bromley to circumnavigate the easterly section of the reservoir. During the course of this they crossed both the dam and the causeway. They enjoyed a fine dry evening for their 6 mile excursion.

This occasional access was by special permission.
